Rotational Molding is a high temperature, low pressure plastic forming process, which makes use of heat and biaxial rotation (i.e. rotation on two axes). The process aids in production of hollow, one piece parts in plastic / polymer. The process is highly useful in making of large, hollow parts like oil tanks as opposed to any other process. The rotational moulds are considerably economical as compared to other varieties of moulds. The process involves minimum wastage and re-usage of excess material and hence is economical, as well as environmentally feasible manufacturing process. Rotational molding process comprises of four distinct phases, as follows:

• Loading a precise amount of polymer generally in the form of powder into the mould
• Heating the mould in an oven as it rotates, until the entire polymer melts and sticks to the wall of the mould wall. The time duration that the mould is in the oven is very crucial. In case it is there for too long, the polymer will degrade and there will be reduction in its impact strength whereas, if too little time is spent, the polymer melting might be incomplete. Thereby, the polymer grains get lack of time to completely melt and unite on the mould wall, consequently leading to the formation of large bubbles in the polymer. The bubbles will have an undesirable effect on the mechanical properties of the final product.
• The mould once ready is cooled down, usually with a fan. This particular stage can be time consuming. But it is very important to cool the polymer properly so that it solidifies and is safe to be handled by the operator. The process takes around-about ten minutes. The part will shrink on cooling and will detach itself from the mould facilitating easy removal of the part. Precautions have to be taken to keep the cooling rate within a certain range. Extremely rapid cooling or extreme slow cooling would result in cooling and shrinking at an uncontrolled rate, resulting in a distorted part.
• Removal of the part. The process ends with the careful removal of the part.
